Build Your Own DVR

So you've heard of DVRs (Digital Video Recorders), maybe you even own one. What if I told you that you could build your own DVR using an old computer and a couple hundred dollars? What if I told you your new DVR would be so powerful and so awesome that it would wipe the floor with any standard cable DVR or Tivo? In fact, your homemade DVR would cease to even be known as a DVR. It would become an HTPC (home theater personal computer). Interested? I thought you might be.

First, you need a computer. It doesn't have to be fancy or powerful, an older model will work fine. Now you'll need to make some purchases.

Since you need a way for signals to get into your HTPC, you'll need a tuner card. This card acts as a cable box for your computer. Just plug your cable or antenna into the back and you'll start receiving television on your PC. Awesome! There are even High Definition options available.

Next, you'll need a way to get that signal from your computer to your television. This is the job of a video card. You probably already have one, just make sure it has an S-Video or DVI out so you can plug it into your TV.

Third, get ahold of some software to serve your media needs. I recommend the free program Mediaportal or the excellent commercial product Beyond TV. If you're lucky, Beyond TV will come with a free remote!

Finally, make sure you've got a DVD drive, a nice big hard drive, and an internet connection and you're all set! You'll be wiping the floor with Tivo in no time!
